Small Space Decorating - Decorating Tips and Tricks to Make Your Home Feel Much Bigger

A small space can offer unique design challenges. Small apartments and rooms can feel cluttered and claustrophobic. Fortunately, there are small space design tricks you can use to open up even the smallest of rooms.

THE MAGIC OF MIRRORS

Mirrors and other reflective accessories are an affordable and super easy way to create an illusion of double the space in your room or hallway. Mirrors bounce light into the room and can extend the appearance of rooms. Use mirrored cabinet or wardrobe doors, or even floor-to-ceiling mirrors to make the smallest of spaces look at lot larger.

COLOR TRICKS

Picking the right color for your small space is vital. Light and neutral colors make rooms look bigger. Cool blue, light green and lilac can make spaces feel airier and less enclosed. Keep your ceiling white and paint any trims, moldings or coving in the same color.

Another way of extending space visually is to use stripes or blocks of color. Vertical stripes tend to draw the eye upwards, making a space look higher, and horizontal stripes can make a space look wider.

Color also lets you create a divide between spaces without having to place furniture or screens in the way. For example, if you have a studio apartment in which the eating space merges with the living with the sleeping space, you can divide them by painting each area a different color. For example, you might pick fresh white for the small living room, green for the living space and orange for the eating area.

THE KEY RULES WHEN BUYING SMALL SPACE FURNITURE

Buy smaller furniture so that you do not clutter your small space. As a general rule of thumb, consider furniture that is tall rather than wide. Nowadays, there are many trendy, sophisticated small furniture designs available, especially from Japan where space is a premium. The Japanese retail company Muji is a great place to start and they have a superb online range of furniture ideal for confined spaces.

Smaller furniture pieces with a more open design work well. For example, a two-seater sofa or love seat with exposed legs work better than a large sofa with high back and sides and hidden legs. Curvy shapes, open arms and low backs are ideal for small spaces.

Glass, perspex or mirrored-furniture offer function without clutter.

Look for multi-purpose furniture. For example, a sofa that can open up into a bed, or a trunk or chest which can double up as a coffee table. You can find trendy lounge cubes and ottomans which open up to create extra storage for bulky items such as spare duvets and blankets.

MAKE FULL USE OF THE WALLS

It's amazing what a drill and a couple of screws can do for small spaces. Create hooks, shelves and small cupboards to store away little used items. I have a shelf above one of my doors, high up towards the ceiling to store my photo albums, and another set of shelves high up in my study just for board games and old CDs.

Instead of buying floor lamps, you can have wall-mounted up-lights instead. This way you have more uninterrupted floor space

SMALL ROOM LAYOUT AND FLOW

When arranging your furniture, think about the flow and pattern you are creating. Start with your largest piece of furniture and look for a wall it can nest against. Setting your furniture at an angle is a good idea as the diagonal line is the longest line in a square space and your eye will naturally follow along this long line.

LIGHTING FOR SMALL ROOMS

With the right lighting type and clever placement, you can open up small spaces dramatically. To make low ceilings seem higher, use up-lights. Avoid ceiling lights as they make your ceiling look even lower. Wall lights with swing arms will provide a great reading light without taking up floor space. And wall sconces (a decorative wall bracket) with a mirrored or reflective back will help magnify light back into the room.

Whatever lighting option you pick, try to eliminate shadows. The more light (natural or artificial) your small space has, the bigger it will appear.

White Ottomans Make the Perfect Piece of Furniture

Your home is a place where you can spend quality time with your family. In addition, it is where you enjoy days off of work and create a bond with each family member. Every home has furniture. You never see a home without a sofa, table or any piece of furniture. There are many types of furniture that can be placed in your home according to your needs.

One good piece of furniture you can add to your collection is an ottoman. An ottoman is sometimes referred as a stool or simply, footstool. It is a seat that is padded and upholstered. It has no armrest or backrest. Some ottomans have hollow insides wherein you can put some things. The hollow inside of an ottoman is sometimes called blanket box.

Fabric Ottoman Coffee Table

If you already own armchairs, the ottoman is the perfect piece of furniture that can go along with it. You can make the ottoman your footrest. It can also be used or improvised as a coffee table. In addition, you can even use it to accentuate your room. There are many designs and styles of ottomans that are available on the market. There are a lot of color choices as well. However, if you want to play it safe with your home's theme, you can always choose the basic white ottoman.

You can place your ottoman anywhere in your home since it does not take too much space. You will not have to worry if the space in your living area or anywhere else in your house is limited. It can also act as an extra seat when visitors are in your home.

You may worry about purchasing a white ottoman because of its high maintenance when cleaning. For long lasting beauty, you may choose a fabric that is easy to clean or replace.

Living Room Furniture Ideas Part 1 - How To Select Comfortable, Stylish and Functional Seating

These living room furniture ideas will help you select a sofa, chairs or couches that meet your requirements for maximum functionality, style and comfort in your home. We will look at three decorating ideas in this article, which is part 1 of a 2-part series.

#1: Function

Fabric Ottoman Coffee Table

Shopping for furniture will be easier when you have a plan in mind. Choose seating based on the number of people who usually sit in the room, the planned activities and the available space. You'll be able to focus on buying the number and types of pieces that best meet your needs.

#2: Proportion and Scale

One of the most challenging tasks when selecting seating for your living room is finding pieces that are the right size in relation to each other and in relation to the room where they are located.

Proportion refers to the size of objects relative to each other. Two different chairs placed together look best when they are roughly the same size. They are in good proportion to each other.

Scale refers to the relationship between the furniture and the space where it is placed. A tiny chair in a large room will look awkward because it is out of scale. Fit the chair to the space. A good rule of thumb is to place a large chair in a large room and a small chair in a small room.

Taking measurements with you to the furniture store will help you select the right pieces. Measure the outside and inside dimensions of your sofa or chairs. First measure the height, width and depth of the back of the piece. Move to the front of the sofa and measure the height and depth of the seat cushion and the height of the arm.

#3: Arrangement

Start with your largest seating piece. It is usually a sofa or loveseat. This piece will provide the foundation for your furniture arrangement.

Next, choose a comfortable armchair that provides good back support while you're watching television or chatting with friends. There's no need to choose a chair that matches the sofa exactly. Matched living room furniture sets are outdated. Do, however, choose a fabric and a style that will coordinate with the sofa.

A cozy lounge chair where you can sit and read or curl up and take a nap will round out the arrangement. Choose a chair that is lightweight and portable so it can be moved around the room easily. It will provide flexible seating options depending on how the room is being used. You can move the chair close to others and be involved in a conversation or tuck it away in a corner where you can relax in peace. Add a matching ottoman where you can rest your feet or use when you need extra seating.

Allow a comfortable distance between pieces of furniture. A group of seats placed 8 to 10 feet apart makes it easy for everyone to be heard without shouting. A walkway that is 2 feet wide allows you to pass between chairs without bumping into them.

Consider the height of your chairs in relation to tables placed near them. An end table works well when it is 2 inches higher or lower than the arm of the chair next to it. A coffee table is easier to reach when the height of the table is lower than the seat of the sofa behind it.

Couches and chairs may not be your best option. Consider the available space in your room. If you live in a studio apartment that doesn't have a separate living room and bedroom you may want to shop for multipurpose pieces. Sleepers or sectionals that provide seating and can be converted into a bed may be more practical in a limited space.

Low Budget, No Budget Decorating

Whether building a new home or remodeling a current home, most budgets can only stretch so far. No money left after the big job? Don't worry. Use these quick fix ideas to give existing furnishings a fresh look without breaking the bank.

Fabric Ottoman Coffee Table

Just Add Paint: Freshly painted walls in coordinating colors can update the look of existing rooms. For a no-fail color scheme choose an inspiration piece from the new space such as an area rug, favorite picture or even a granite counter top. Select three colors from that piece to use as a guide for painting adjoining spaces. For example, use the background color for the walls in the family room. Choose a deeper color for the hallway walls and the boldest color for the powder room.

Fabric Ottoman Coffee Table

Arrange For Comfort: Try placing existing furniture on an angle for a fresh, new twist. Aim for cozy conversation groupings in a 6 to 8 foot radius to promote better family interaction. Pull your seating away from the walls and into the room to create more comfortable and intimate spaces.

Think Outside the Box: Use your old things in new ways. Switch out furniture from other rooms to instantly redecorate and refresh a space. Move the china cabinet into the entry for a dramatic focal point. Use an antique hope chest or large ottoman as a coffee table. A bedroom dresser becomes a sideboard with the addition of a large piece of art work and a pair of buffet lamps. Break up sets of furniture to eliminate that "matchy-matchy" look.

Artful Accessories: A few well chosen accessories can transform a room. Add colorful throw pillows to the sofa in silk, velvet or tapestry. Give old lamps an up-dated look with new shades. Un-clutter the coffee table and bookshelves. Group items in odd numbers. Try 3, 5, or 7 to keep things interesting. Choose several large scale pieces for drama. Add canned "up" lights behind floor plants to create interesting wall shadows.

Raise The Rods: Give any room a new look simply by raising the curtain rods. Raising the rods 6 to 10 inches above the frame allows more light which makes windows appear taller and rooms feel more spacious. This works particularly well for top treatments such as valances. If curtain panels are too short to raise, create a custom look by adding a band of coordinating fabric at the top or bottom hem.

The New Old Upholstered Storage Bench

Today, as many people are downsizing their homes to conserve energy or save money or both, space for everything becomes a problem. A practical solution is an old colonial idea somewhat modernized, an Upholstered Storage Bench. Even if downsizing is not happening, who doesn't need extra storage space for those hard to place, but necessary items?

Fabric Ottoman Coffee Table

These benches are perfect for the foyer, or the bedroom, or the dining room. In fact, they will go in just about any room in the house, even the eat-in kitchen. In addition to storage, they can be used for extra seating or even as an extra table or coffee table.

Fabric Ottoman Coffee Table

The Upholstered Storage Bench comes in all sizes, shapes and configurations. There are benches that look like chaise lounges. Some are square and boxy, while others are rectangular. Many have arms at either end while others have nothing at all, or are rimmed around the top. No matter what the decor is, there is an Upholstered Storage Bench to suit, whether it is French provincial, Italian Renaissance, or modern.

In addition to the shapes and styles, these benches are available in any covering imaginable. From tufted leather to hounds tooth fabric to overstuffed with rolled arms, the Upholstered Storage Bench is versatile enough for any home. Some benches are made to blend in such as the camouflage style bench for the kid's room, while others are made to stand out as a focal point in a room such as the tufted white leather bench.

After the shape and style and covering of the bench, the next point is color. Not just white, gray, brown and black; no, today there is a rainbow of colors available for the Upholstered Storage Bench. Pinks and Greens and Herringbone and Purple; if it can be imagined, there is probably a bench already made in that color.

When considering size, one of the first things to do is determine exactly what is going to be stored in the bench. This will probably also determine in what room the bench will be placed. A bench large enough to accommodate what is to be stored, but at the same time not overpower the room is the optimum arrangement.
